Thermal security cameras provide visual context in challenging conditions, including darkness. The best thermal security cameras can detect threats at night and provide coverage in working environments, like mining sites. If they have radiometric capabilities, these types of cameras can also detect overheating objects.

A thermal security camera works by detecting and measuring infrared energy emitted by an object. It then converts this infrared energy data into a visual image that can provide insights for the operator.

This is dependent on the camera’s configurations and capabilities. Some PoE thermal camera models can detect infrared radiation up to a few meters away and other thermal security cameras have a working range of up to a few miles away.

Thermal cameras can not see through a few materials, such as glass and aluminum foil. Glass and aluminum foil block infrared rays from passing through it and, as a result, the radiation can not be detected by a thermal surveillance camera.

Thermal surveillance cameras and infrared (IR) cameras are not the same. The key difference is that infrared cameras can detect and visualize objects based on the IR radiation they reflect and emit. These cameras visualize stimuli in a thermal image and can see in complete darkness.
