For companies who want to be at the forefront of technology or simply love their tech, mobile technology is where it’s at. So what’s holding others back from embracing this next level access technology?

For some, myths about security risk or being tracked by spyware dressed up as access control may be a deterrent. While others see mobile as a ‘nice-to-have’ when their core access needs are already being achieved by cards.

The reality is that mobile technology offers higher security than traditional access (on par with bank level standards) and delivers more features than traditional cards can. This doesn’t mean that cards are redundant (yet!). In fact, one of the advantages of mobile technology is the choice it offers end users. A phone and card can be used simultaneously, giving sites the flexibility to mix and match technology in ways that best suit their business needs.

Mobile technology is secure. Features like optional two-factor authentication (PIN or fingerprint) for added security are stored on the phone, alleviating the concerns some people have about the safety of their personal information being stored elsewhere. And it’s not spyware!

We see businesses deploying Bluetooth enabled readers to future proof themselves and take advantage of benefits such as easy and remote provisioning, long range access requests and interaction with other building systems via the additional controls available upon their smartphone.

Mobile credentials can also be provisioned at a lower cost when you consider the on-going expense of administering card based credentials. It’s also a powerful staff engagement tool given the predominance of smart phones and the care most people take with them. Let’s face it, you’re more likely to turn around and go back home for your phone when you forget it and they’re less likely to be lost than cards.

Many companies are realising that things like remote provisioning and improving an employee or visitor experience also has a demonstrable payback – from staff engagement to brand perception. Access can also be provided to visitors directly to their phone before they arrive and even scheduled to begin and expire when needed.

For staff, it simply makes life easier. They don’t have to dig out keys or cards to unlock a door or gate and have the convenience of being able to open doors elsewhere onsite via a nearby reader or at multiple sites with the same application. Mobile offers complete control and the ability to interact with your other building systems remotely, whether you need to arm or disarm systems or lock down a site entirely.

While mobile is applicable for most business situations, it is particularly useful in shared or rented office spaces, shared sports facilities, and secure buildings with multiple visitors.

Going mobile solves real business need, it’s secure, easy to use, and engages staff and visitors alike while reducing operational expenditure.

I’d call that a winning hand.
