Tüpras Refineries in Turkey Rely on Pelco
by Orhan Aksel, MGS Founder and Cheryl Spangler, Pelco International Marketing
Manager, cspangler@pelco.com
Tüpras – Turkish Petroleum Refineries – is Turkey’s largest public company and
has production and distribution facilities in four locations spread throughout
Turkey. The largest of these is located in Kocaeli, where an August 1999
earthquake resulted in a destructive fire.
Diversity Key
Due to the size and critical nature of the Tüpras Kocaeli facility, management
decided in 2001 to install a video security system for facility surveillance
purposes. Sixteen prominent electronic security integrators were invited to bid
on the project. And after a six-month technical consideration, that number was
reduced to six. Finally, in April 2002, MGS – with 15 years in the electronic
security industry – was awarded the project.
With a total of 55km of fiber-optic cable; 14 units of 17-meter high,
earthquake-resistant (up to 8.0 on the Richter Scale) dome towers within the
facility; 96 channels of video motion detection; and a complete Pelco system
consisting of more than 100 fixed cameras and 14 Spectra III positioning
systems, the project is the largest video security installation in Turkey, in
terms of construction size and diversification.
The full Pelco configuration consists of 14 Spectra III positioning systems,
more than 100 MC3651H-2 LowLight digital monochrome highresolution cameras, a
CM9740 matrix switcher, CM9760-MDAs, CM9760- ALMs, CM9760-REL, and several
DX7000 DVRs – all driven by the VMX200 Video Management System.
Currently there is one main control center, but the customer is planning on
expanding the facility’s surveillance capabilities.
Completed Early
The customer established an installation deadline of 210 days. However, with
the experience of MGS for heavy industrial projects and prompt delivery of
Pelco products, MGS completed the project in 190 days, three weeks ahead of
schedule.
The customer is extremely happy about the performance of MGS and Pelco. Spectra
III performance on the 17-meter towers is unmatched and provides a constant
helicopter-like surveillance on the refinery.
MGS – Merkezi Güvenlik Sistemleri, which translates to Central Security Systems
– is the leading electronic security company in Turkey. Based in Istanbul, MGS
has exclusively represented Pelco for more than 10 years in Turkey with its
"no-matter-what customer satisfaction" philosophy, similar to Pelco’s.
Recently, MGS has been awarded installations within some of the largest
industries, and with its excellent reputation in the Turkish security industry,
has a substantial market-share. MGS has increased its Pelco sales by
175-percent since 2001, demonstrating the growing presence of Pelco in this
progressive and industrialized country.
