Pacom And Pelco Help Secure Olympic Games In Sydney
During September 2000, the eyes of the world were focused on Sydney, Australia
as the modern Olympiad began.
With more than 111,000 international visitors expected to watch the world’s
finest athletes from 198 nations compete in over 1,700 individual events, it
quickly becomes obvious that security and surveillance are very real concerns.
Stadium Australia – the main Olympic stadium – is the largest outdoor venue in
Olympic history. Already it has hosted crowds of more than 100,000, and
officials expected the Olympic opening ceremony to top its capacity of 110,000.
Sydney set a new Olympic record of sorts with the completion of the venues at
the main games precinct at Homebush Bay some nine months before the start of
the Games. It’s understandable that to coordinate such an engineering and
construction feat, officials had to work with and rely on the best integrators,
installers and products to get the job done; and for CCTV security and
surveillance, that meant Pacific Communications (PACOM) and Pelco.
As Pelco’s exclusive, authorized Australian Distributor, Pacific Communications
has achieved phenomenal success with the supply of Pelco CCTV systems and
products for the Sydney Olympic Games and associated projects. Pelco products
played a major role in the safety and security for the games. A large number of
Pelco products have been installed at some key Olympic venues and other related
sites.
With operations in Sydney, Brisbane, and Melbourne, Australia; as well as
Singapore (Pacom SE Asia), Malaysia (Pacific Communications Services), and New
Zealand, Pacific Communications supplies a comprehensive range of closed
circuit television equipment to the market.
Respect for Security
It should be noted at this point that because of security concerns, the vendors
(such as Pacom and Pelco) were asked not to release or publish detailed
information or photographs of specific security system and CCTV installations
until after the games completion. A brief summary of the Pacom/Pelco projects
as follows:
Olympic Stadium
The Sydney 2000 Olympic Stadium is included with over 80 Pelco Spectra domes,
Pelco Legacy systems all controlled from a Pelco System 9760 video
matrix/management system.

surface-mount Camclosure integrated systems.
Sydney Metropolitan Area, Electrical substations
Ten Electrical substations located in the Sydney metropolitan area were seen to
be high security risk during the Sydney Games. A major networking security
system was recently completed which included Pelco Esprit integrated
positioning systems and surface-mount Pelco Camclosure units.
29 Pelco Esprit systems with Sony SSC-DC54AP and 20X zoom lenses
25 Pelco Camclosure integrated units
In addition to all the new installations, the Sydney CBD area was installed with
over 50 Pelco Spectra domes 2 years ago. These cameras are providing
surveillance monitoring for the Sydney’s busiest tourist areas during the
Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.
A big congratulations is extended to Pacific Communications for all their
success with the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. We look forward to exploring the
engineering of the systems and their effectiveness in future issues of the
Pelco Press.
