Watching Over Higher Education - Pelco Solution Helps Secure BYU Campus

“The system works fantastically and has helped on several occasions where, after the fact, we have found damage to the building or pieces of art. We were able to go back and figure out who was responsible and act accordingly.”
                            – Sergeant Randy O’Hara, Director of Security for the art museum

                            Mission
Established in 1875, Brigham Young University serves about 29,000 students on a 560-acre campus consisting of 311 buildings and encompassing the entire 84602 zip code. Individual departments on the Provo, Utah campus needed a way to protect physical property, which evolved into a campus-wide Pelco solution to review incidents and actively monitor video.

                            Solution
The campus-wide solution consists of more than 600 Pelco cameras, including a combination of fixed cameras and Spectra positioning systems, 29 DX8000 DVRs, 15 DX8100 DVRs and five DVR5100s. For BYU, one of the system’s most appealing features was the ability to throttle bandwidth usage in the DVR.

                            Result
The Pelco solution is used to protect everything from physical property and valuable items to research laboratories, museums and the campus library (with about $400 million in physical assets), as well as view footage of car accidents or other incidents occurring on campus. BYU plans to have as many as 2,000 cameras installed on campus by 2010.
